Built To Belong

Built To Belong presents a practical, relationship-centered approach to creating classrooms where every student is a valued and contributing member of the community.
 
Drawing on nearly thirty years of public-school teaching experience, I explored how belonging, responsibility, support, restorative practices, and student agency can work together to create stronger classroom cultures.
 
Rather than relying primarily on compliance, rewards, punishment, or exclusion, the book encourages educators to build classrooms where students know they belong before they succeed, receive additional support without losing dignity, and experience accountability without disconnection. Through connections to MTSS, PBIS, restorative practices, and research on motivation and relationships, the book offers a philosophy that is both practical and deeply human.
 
At its heart are three questions every student should be able to answer with confidence: Do I belong here? Do I matter here? Will someone help me when I struggle?
 
Built To Belong is an invitation to educators at every stage of their careers to build classrooms where students do more than attend—they belong, contribute, take responsibility, repair harm, and grow together.
